The pelvic floor is composed of muscles and connective tissue that sit inside the pelvis. These tissues help support the pelvic organs and are considered a part of the body’s stabilizing system. Stress, pain, emotion, and trauma can all affect the pelvic floor which can lead to pain and/or dysfunction.
Aside from the traumas and stress of pregnancy and postpartum, these are a few other common dysfunctions we may experience related to pelvic floor issues:
- Urinary or bowel incontinence
- Pain with intercourse
- Feeling of heaviness
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Difficulty with feminine hygiene products
- Difficulty emptying the bowel or bladder
- Low back or Pelvic/hip pain
